Marie Lan Matiko is one of America's leading Asian-American actresses. A philanthropist at heart, Marie Lan Matiko has dedicated her artistic career to bring beauty and truth and to humanize our experience. In November 2005, HOLLYWOOD REPORTER named Marie Lan Matiko as one of the "Next Big." Just last year, she was the AX Awards 2006 Top 20 Newcomers.
Marie Lan Matiko was an Environmental Engineering major at UCLA, and declined an ROTC scholarship when she was hand-picked by producer Cameron Macintosh at her first professional audition and won the role of "Gigi/Mimi" in the First Broadway tour of MISS SAIGON. Before it's ten Tony Award nominations, MISS SAIGON made history with $25 Million advance ticket sales. Marie Lan Matiko toured for over 2,000 performances from Vancouver's Queen Elizabeth theater to private parties for President Clinton at the White House to Chicago's prestigious theater scene. The 1st National Tour of MISS SAIGON with 36 trucks of sets and equipment was the largest road show in history.
In New Line's THE CORRUPTOR ($20M) produced by Oliver Stone, Marie Lan Matiko debuts as the love interest of the legendary Chow Yun-Fat. Challenging acting work from the start, she won the role of MAY, a heroine-addict and indentured servant trapped by NY Chinatown's Triads. Under the fine direction of James Foley(Glengarry Glen Ross), Chow Yun-Fat and Mark Wahlberg share textured and fine scene work alongside Marie Lan Matiko. The next year, after five grueling auditions amongst world-class talent and a recommendation from Oliver Stone, Marie Lan Matiko won the role of Julia starring opposite Wesley Snipes in Warner Brothers' THE ART OF WAR ($60 M), where she was nominated as Best Actress in a feature film at the AX Awards (the Asian-American Film and TV awards). THE ART OF WAR was nominated for 9 Genie Awards and won the Golden Eagle Award for highest-ever grossing Canadian film.
Set to release in theatres this September, Marie Lan Matiko stars as a sexy saint who saves the soul of Patrick Warburton (Seinfeld, Bee Movie, Rules of Engagement) in THE CIVILIZATION OF MAXWELL BRIGHT (8 awards including 3 Grand Jury's), sharing the screen alongside Eric Roberts, Carol Kane, Simon Callow, and John Glover. This winter, Marie Lan Matiko is MRS. WALSH-MELLMAN in DENNIS THE MENACE CHRISTMAS. Marie Lan Matiko plays Dennis's cheeky grade school teacher and voices the group therapist of Dennis's frustrated parents alongside Robert Wagner and Louise Fletcher. This year in FOX's DATE MOVIE ($22 M) from the writers of SCARY MOVIE, "Betty Lan Orchid" has brought new meaning to the term "Japanese-Jewish hoochie mama". Marie Lan Matiko made a comedic cameo alongside comedy greats, Fred Willard and Jennifer Coolidge of the Christopher Guest series.
Marie Lan Matiko has also starred opposite leading men Mark Wahlberg, Tom Sizemore, Wesley Snipes and Craig T. Nelson. Marie Lan Matiko also starred in GANG OF ROSES with Lil' Kim, Bobby Brown and Praz (The Fugees), and sang on the soundtrack and score alongside these music icons. Other film and television credits include Universal's MYSTERY MEN, New Line Cinema's THE CORRUPTOR, TBS's COUNTERSTRIKE, CBS's THE DISTRICT, Michael Mann's ROBBERY HOMICIDE DIVISION, and also voiced Gong Li in Michael Mann's MIAMI VICE. Her children's film, THE FORBIDDEN WARRIOR, wherein Marie Lan Matiko plays Seki, the forbidden warrior, has been receiving praise from kids all around the country. Her greatest giggle to date is that Marie Lan Matiko's characters are on several collectible XENA: THE WARRIOR PRINCESS trading cards.
Marie Lan Matiko presented at Harvard for the Asian American National Conference on Law and Public Policy addressing how media shapes public perception and policy. Additionally, she has been invited to present at UCI, UCLA, NY, SIFF and SD film festivals, the National Association of Asian Professionals, as well as universities in Asia. After meeting with top policy leaders and strategists, she was inspired to carry her mission forward by producing a children's TV series K'POW!, a hip-hop multi-cultural Mickey Mouse club. She currently sits on the board of advisors for CTT (Creative Think Tank), the San Diego Asian American Film Festival, Arnold Laboratories, PURE FUN Confections, UCLA's Global NeuroRescue and VIVACE.
Most recently with her strong leadership and diplomacy, five languages and a reputation for philanthropy, Marie Lan Matiko with Dr. Lazereff at UCLA Pediatrics Neurosurgery construct medical relief missions for abandoned babies in China. In LA's Chinatown, Marie Lan Matiko founded and ran a non-profit, VIVACE Conservatory for the performing arts. For seven years she taught freedom of expression through song, dance and performance. In her fun time, Marie Lan Matiko explores and adventures living through extreme sports, skateboarding and snowboarding "killer terrain", scuba, makes music, plays in the lab with organic chemists or is in the studio creating prototypes with designers, inventors and wizards.
